The Art Program 2
Let me continue where I left off. Isaid I would do anything in my power to keep the program running. They have had meetings on this, and I’m sure they’ll have more. The way they have it now, which is the way they have been having it for the whole time the program has been running, a system of taxi cabs will pick up the people and transport them to where they need to go. But now, they want to change it to use a system of vans. I don’t think this will work at all. For the whole time the program has existed, it has beenifited both the taxi drivers, and the people who use the Art program. But now, this van system they want to use will take away from that. Hear’s a good example. The explain it the best way I can, to anyone else who can drive, a taxi is like our own personal car. The only difference, there is someone else driving. This van system will take that away from us. Let me ask this question. Would you get on a van to ride 2 hours to get to your destination, even though it mayve only 30 minutes away? I’m sure nobody would. But that’s what you’re faced with on this van system they’re talking about. How many of you work in the workshops that have a goverment contract to hire blind people to work. I work in one of those. And if you’re late getting to work, that will take time away from you. Even if it’s not your faught. I know some people who were penalized for not being to work on time, and it was not their faught. Their van broke down, and they had to wait for someone to bring a new one so they could get to work. These taxi cabs get us around town so we can get things as indipendent as a sighted person driving a car. That’s why I want them to keep this program just the way it is.
